This risograph’s namesake, the second studio album by Owen Pallett (fka Final Fantasy) He Poos Clouds, was inspired by video games and character culture. The early 2000s was a pivotal time of escapism into game culture—the beginning of building relationships with pixels on your screen and RPGs reigned supreme. It was also the beginning of identity immersion into fictional worlds, a type of escapism that runs rampant in video games and extends now to social media.

By 2006, my peers and I were deeply entrenched in building our dream (or nightmare) lives on The Sims, or escaping into the complex storylines and never ending archive of the RPG Final Fantasy. The internet allowed us to dive into niche media previously inaccessible to a suburban teen. Nonsensical websites and videos started popping up that later developed into memes. He Poos Clouds is an ode to the outlandish, to absurdist character imagery that conceals genuine emotion and meaning, revealing itself only to those willing to look closely.
